Walk with me in this short video and ID some native/naturalized plants of South Korea. It is monsoon season in July and August with 100% humidity and 90 degree temps. What we call "traditional" plants are native ones to East Asia, and they grow effortlessly in the valley where Seoul is located, sandwiched between mountains. Plants grow densely here, particularly in forested areas. Common native trees are Pine, Ginkgo, Japanese Maple, Ash, Persimmon, Magnolia, Chestnut, Paulownia, Zelkova, Crape Myrtle, Cherry... Azaleas, Buxus, and Euonymus (I think) are typical foundation plants. Seasonal color with Forsythia, Spiraea, Viburnum, Hydrangea, Lilac, Hibiscus, Kerria, Hemerocallis, Coreopsis, Camellia, Gaura, Peony Grasses and grass-like plants are Miscanthus, Pennisetum, Liriope I'm sure you're familiar with most of these plants. Weird to think that they're "native". So many Americans love and also hate these particular ones. While I think they're not suited for California's dry climate, I do think that they're important to keep in mind and be open to since it's personal to many folks who perhaps grew up to these plants and have a sentimental connection to them. If someone is fixated on a Hydrangea or Jasmine or Banana, it's probably not because they're drawn to the look of it... most likely it feels like home to them/us. Something to consider is how to include some of these plants in a smart and reasonable way and be inclusive of diverse cultures... I think about that a lot. Low water can be beautiful 💕 Today we checked in on this garden that has mostly California native and Mediterranean climate plants. A year old, it is already a showstopper for passerby, my lovely clients have noted. This dry creek that reused some of their existing river rock is a focal point for native plant enthusiasts who don't mind taking a selfie or two in front of it. 📷 Our client has also benefited from the landscape rebate by converting their previous lawn and sprinklers to water efficient drip irrigation. 💦 We are happy to see it grow and develop into a peaceful space that the couple can enjoy as they head into retirement. 🥰 Thanks to Javier for installing the garden. We lucked out and got nearly perfect plants, including heathy specimen Cercis trees, from @devilmountainnursery 💯 Stay tuned for updates. Finally made a before and after video of this sweet opportunity to design a garden for the kids in Menlo Park, CA! It's a safe space for learning, exploration and growth that embraces natural materias, seasonal cycles, and imperfection! 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👶👶 Wait for it... the after pics come midway and towards the end of the video 🤗 This year, I've designed quite a bit of gardens from Millbrae and way down into Saratoga. It's been a challenge balancing the client's expectations vs. what's appropriate and sustainable for our changing times, particularly in California. Many folks desire no maintenance and lower water bills which unfortunately result in misinformed decisions on less trees, more hardscape and artificial turf 🤢. There have been many landscapes that I've had to design that will initially pass the low water requirements from the city only to have things get pulled out by the homeowner and replaced with higher water plants after inspections pass (seems this happens a lot in Hillsborough!
