As much as I'm a part of the quantity over quality group, I'm glad I decided to push this piece as far as I could, as a way to test my growth over the past year.

I kept the style quite simple this time, going for a more 'animated' look with Dustin.

Took a few iterations in the sketch phase to get somewhere I was happy with it, with each step getting closer to the simplification I was looking for.
•
Likeness Tip: One thing that helps me get better at looking for simplifications while maintaining likeness, is looking at how other pro artists simplify the same faces differently from me, and then comparing. (Which is another benefit of using popular characters to practice your likeness). @xidingart is someone who comes to mind, when we're talking about stylizing faces of popular characters—definitely give his work a look if you haven't yet.

Finally finished this painting after chipping away at it for a few days.

I tried a few iterations and poses before getting to this one, but I was finding it difficult to maintain likeness while also amplifying the expression and stylizing.
•
So I did what any efficient artist would do and started from scratch, going with a more neutral pose this time, which led to a much more pleasing result!
•
Working on multiple aspects at once can be ovewhelming, so deciding what you want to take away from a piece can help ensure you're making the most of your illustrations.
In my case, likeness and stylization were my main focuses, so expression/emotion took a back seat in the end.

The deadly Yokai butterlies terrify most students at Yokai High, but they seem to share an unusual bond with Ophelia. Perhaps one based on mutual trust?

Here's my take on @maxgrecke's DTIYS challenge: Yokai High!

There were 3 characters to choose from, and I was initially going to go with Karl. However, a bluescreen and some time later, Ophelia's simple design convinced me to make a painting of her instead.
•
I was actually excited to watch and post the timelapse of this piece, but my PC gave up and corrupted the recording. Sorry about that!
