Latinos Unidos ERG member and founder Dr. Ricardo Montelongo invited Latina undergraduate student leader, Ranchel Alvarado (@chely_genius), to his HEDL 7377 Leadership of Higher Education Institutions doctoral seminar to share and discuss her TEDxSHSU talk from Spring 2022. In the talk, Ranchel tells her story of biculturalism and the Mexican American experience. She also answered questions from doctoral students regarding her SHSU experience. Dr. Ric met Ranchel at her TED Talk and promised her an opportunity to share her work in his classes.

Dr. Helen Berg was honored with the ADoT Excellence in Action: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice Award! This award recognizes education leaders who have demonstrate diversity, equity, and inclusion through direct action, who promote a positive culture for all learners, and who share their expertise and knowledge in this area with others to support growth.

Brenda Fernandez, M.Ed.
Associate Director of First-Year Experience (@shsu_fye)

Brenda Fernandez, associate director for First-Year Experience at Sam Houston State University, has been selected as a National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Escaleras Institute scholar.

Fernandez is one of nearly 40 individuals selected and one of just two in the State of Texas slated to begin work for the program at California State University, Fullerton in October. This professional development institute encompasses research and mentorship and is designed for Latinx/a/o higher education professionals seeking senior level roles.

Dr. Gina Brynildsen (@drginabrynildsen)

Dr. Brynildsen is the founding advisor of a new organization within COBA known as the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA). This initiative is part of the work Dr. Brynildsen is doing as a member of the COBA DEI-B Task Force.

Dr. Brynildsen is also on the COBA social media team. Recently this team launched a Hispanic Heritage month campaign that features our COBA Hispanic/Latinx faculty.

Lastly, we wanted to mention that The Department of Management, Marketing, and Information Systems is supporting Dr. Brynildsen’s travel to the HACU (Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities) annual conference October 8-10 in San Diego, CA. Dr. Brynildsen has plans to bring back the information, tools, and best practices for supporting our Hispanic/Latinx students and sharing them with the university.
